GRID-Arendal, a center collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme, and SKUP, Norway’s association for investigative journalism, are offering 2 grants of NOK 25,000 for environmental investigative journalists working globally on the issues of organized environmental crime for the year 2016.

Ssuggested topics for investigation should belong to one of five areas of illegal operations:

  • logging;
  • fisheries;
  • mining;
  • trafficking, dumping and trade of toxic waste;
  • poaching and trade of wildlife.

Grants will help investigative environmental journalists to cover the necessary costs of document retrieval, travel to develop and interview sources, and other investigation-related expenses.

The application should reflect some preliminary research, outlying the importance of the case and some background information on the suggested issue, provide a clear sense of place, characters, narrative and reporting strategy and a publishing plan. It also requires a CV, two letters of recommendation and reference to previous publications.

Applications should be forwarded to Valentin Emelin, the Head of Environmental Crime Program in GRID-Arendal electronically at yemelin@grida.no. The deadline for receiving applications is November 1, 2015. Applications will be reviewed by a joint GRID-Arendal/SKUP selection committee and winning grant recipients will be announced on Christmas Eve on web-sites of GRID-Arendal and SKUP.

The grants will be announced at 15.00 hrs by senior advisor Christian Nellemann from Grid-Arendal at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Lillehammer during a seminar session on Investigating Environmental Crime: Illegal Logging.

  1. Dear sir/madam,
    I’m writing to request information on how I can apply for the grant. I’m a journalist based in Mombasa Kenya. The Port of Mombasa has been cited as the major transit point for elephant tusk and rhino horns. I would like to do an investigative story on the source of the illegal trade and the traffickers are able to doge state machines to export them.
    Kind regards

    • There is apparently no formal application form. Here is what the announcement states: “The application should reflect some preliminary research, outlying the importance of the case and some background information on the suggested issue, provide a clear sense of place, characters, narrative and reporting strategy and a publishing plan. It also requires a CV, two letters of recommendation and reference to previous publications.” Because there are only two grants, each about US$3,000, GIJN suggests that you also consider other sources of funding for environmental stories. Check GIJN’s resource page, Grants and Fellowships, at http://gijn.org/resources/grants-and-fellowships. And good luck!

  3. Dear sir/ Madam
    I’m a journalist based in North Rift of Kenya seeking information on how to secure a grant to facilitate a story on logging. Some counties such as Turkana and West Pokot are semi arid areas that experience persistent drought but despite being environmental disadvantaged logging is rampant, a practice which is worsening the situation.
    waiting for your positive response
    thanks

  4. I would like to take part in the competition for a grant on the topic of the destruction of fish stocks and all of the fish fauna in the rivers in the construction of their dams. I collected documentary information on the topic for a quarter-century of my work. And this information is important for all rivers on the planet, all countries and citizens

  5. Good day.
    Unfortunately learned about the contest just now. Investigate in the field of ecology. Specifically, illegal logging and disturbance of the environmental balance. Can I participate in the contest or the acceptance of applications closed?
    With respect
