Special Events

Our historic hotel, the Raddison Blu, includes fine places to share a drink, including this great basement bar.

Yes, we’ve got more than 150 panels, workshops, training sessions, and keynote speakers. But it wouldn’t be a GIJC if we didn’t find the time, as the Norwegians say, to “lower the shoulders,” socialize, and have a great time. We know from experience that sitting down and talking informally can be the beginning of your next big scoop.

Gala Dinner

All participants are welcome to the main gala dinner on Saturday evening, October 10. Join us for a sumptuous meal, drinks, and some great entertainment arranged by our hosts at SKUP. During the festivities, GIJN will also announce the extraordinary winners of the Global Shining Light Award. The Gala Dinner is included in the hotel package, so don’t miss it.

Investigative Film Festival

In the evenings, after the formal program is over for the day, we’re showing documentaries in our own GIJC movie theater. Among the films is the world premiere of Assignment China: Follow the Money, the behind-the-scenes story of journalists who exposed the wealth of top Chinese leaders — and the dramatic, controversial, and often frightening consequences they faced. Also: India’s Daughter, on the epidemic of sexual assault in that country; the undercover investigation Nigeria’s Fake Doctors; Serbia: The Fight for Truth; Guatemala: Land of Terror; and Drone, which takes you inside the CIA’s secret war in Pakistan.

Muckrakers

The Muckrakers played to a packed house in Kiev. Don’t miss their return to Lillehammer!

The Muckrakers

If you’ve been to any of the four last GIJCs, chances are you saw GIJN’s own band, The Muckrakers. Formed at a jam at the Lillehammer conference in 2008, the R&B group went on to play to packed crowds from around the world in Geneva, Kiev, and Rio. The international band — featuring Ana Simonovska on vocals (Macedonia), Mark Hunter on guitar (France/US), Dave Kaplan on harmonica (US), and Geir Aage Vollan on bass (Norway) — will return with its original cast to where it all began.

CryptoParty

On the opening night of the conference we invite you to a CryptoParty in the hotel’s “Bagler’n Datapub.” Here you can meet and discuss encryption while learning and exchanging public crypto keys. We’re extending a special welcome to attendees with just basic computer skills, but the GIJC’s best geeks’n’nerds are all invited. Visitors will go home with a running crypto-toolkit on their laptops.

Receptions

We have receptions planned for both Wednesday and Thursday evenings. We expect a lot of you to arrive in Lillehammer the night before the conference starts. So on Wednesday the 7th, you can join us for a fun barbeque gathering. Then, on Thursday, join the full conference for a big reception with entertainment.

We’re working on more special events — including some special networking sessions — so be sure to check back in coming weeks.

(And what’s this rumor about a fishing cabin….?)
