Global Shining Light Award

Every two years, the Global Investigative Journalism Network presents the Global Shining Light Award, a unique award which honors investigative journalism in a developing or transitioning country, done under threat, duress, or in the direst of conditions. The winner receives an honorary plaque, US$1,000, and a trip to the Global Investigative Journalism Conference to accept the award in front of hundreds of their colleagues from around the world. Deadline for the next award is May 1, 2015, for stories published or broadcast between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2014. The application form with guidelines is here. Online submissions are strongly preferred.

Welcome (Back) to Lillehammer — SKUP Gets Ready for GIJC15!

The ninth Global Investigative Journalism Conference at Lillehammer, Norway, is now less than a year away. Your local hosts at SKUP — Norway’s investigative journalists association — went there last week and are pleased to report that plans for GIJC15 look most promising. For those who missed the fifth GIJC in 2008 — also hosted in Lillehammer — here are some quick facts about place and the conference venue. Lillehammer is a small city in the countryside north of Oslo. It is known as the host city of the Winter Olympics in 1994, and in recent years for the TV series “Lilyhammer,” about a New York gangster (Steven van Zandt) who hides in the town.

After Lillehammer: Call for Proposals for GIJC 2017

The Global Investigative Journalism Conference is the world’s premier international gathering of investigative journalists. Held every two years, the conferences have trained more than 5,000 journalists, sparked hundreds of investigations and collaborative projects, and played a key role in the global spread of investigative reporting over the past 15 years. With a focus on training and networking, the GIJC attracts as many as 1,000 reporters and editors from 100 countries. Producing the event requires intense planning, fund-raising, and operational skills by its hosts, but the effort is worth it because of the high standards of GIJC speakers and sessions, its global impact, and the way it raises the profile and stature of the organizers. The Global Investigative Journalism Network, which oversees the conferences, is now accepting proposals for the 10th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, to be held in 2017.
